I'm going to take the forum in a slightly different direction. Some of you are aware that my son has dyslexia and that DQ's him from military service. He's joining the Auxiliary to serve along side the Active/Reserve component, but has also taken an interest in some of the civilian opportunities the service can provide. Anyone here have any knowledge of some of the different jobs that are around? He's really interested in parallel to uniform service occupations like environmental protection, SAR, marine transportation & vessel traffic control. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the medical requirements for the civilian jobs in our service but he can see what's currently being shopped at www.usajobs.gov

    Storm,
Thanks for the info. I figured it couldn't hurt. With the amount of experience on the forum, someone here has had to have the opportunity to work with the civilian side, and maybe even worked with someone with one of the more obscure jobs.

What about Conservation Corps? There are state-run programs, it's hands on work, and definitely service-oriented. I think their activities vary state to state, but my friend who did it in MN loved it.

Also look at stuff like Sheriff Depts and Natural Resources Police in diff states. I assume his dyslexia would disqualify him from being an officer, but I'm not sure. I'm sure they have other jobs available though. My shipmate did SAR for a Sheriff's dept on the west coast.

The really and I mean really hard part of getting Federal Gov't job is the competition for the position and knowing how to work the system. Then some areas are hot beds for federal jobs and others aren't I've tried a few times with no luck.

USA Jobs is the starting point.

    Good luck.

Believe it or not, dyslexia doesn't DQ him from any other occupation. He was only DQ'd from military service because he had an IEP in place for school after age 14. That was the kicker for MEPS. Any other job says if he can hack the standards, come on in. If he wants to be an LEO, there's nothing stopping him except him. He's managed to work around the dyslexia rather nicely, and is maintain a 'B+' average. He's looked at other SAR positions as well, but the CG civilian side piqued his interest. He was on USA Jobs today, had an intent look on his face. When I get home from duty, we're going to chat and see what he's found.

    Thanks, y'all.
