My husband has recently gotten orders to the sector in Valdez, AK. I've been trying to do some research, but haven't been able to find any updated information. We will be moving the beginning of Jan so not the convenient time, but we're very excited! We also just bought a new Honda Civic (before finding out). Will we have any problems with that? Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks!

We were stationed in Valdez. A Honda Civic probably isn't the BEST car but we had a Chevy Lumina minivan then traded it for an Oldsmobile Silhouette, also a minivan. I never once had a problem. If you can handle snow and now how to drive cautiously, you'll be fine. Don't let anyone tell you that you MUST have 4 wheel drive, no you don't. We drove a Chevy Chevette and a Chevy Spectrum when we lived on Kodiak, too. Never had a single problem. Housing was nice when I was there and they've only improved it, so that should be good. The elementary school isn't far from housing, my son would walk alone in 1st grade. There is everything you could need in Valdez but maybe not everything you want. Anchorage is about 4 hours driving, Fairbanks close to the same. Then you have commissary, exchange, medical, department stores, malls. But it was a good tour of duty and I liked living there a lot.

January will also be tough because the winters are long and cold. Please don't let that influence your feelings about the state. When the spring hits it will be amazing and gorgeous! Your second winter won't seem quite as bad because you'll know what to expect and you'll know spring is coming. Spring is phenomenal!

Congratulations. People pay good money to go to Alaska and Valdez and Uncle Sam is sending you there for free. I don't know what the unoffical USCG mission is in Alaska but for the USAF it was hunting and fishing. We spent most of our off duty time camping, hunting, fishing and exploring.

It is warmer on the coast then the interior so you will not face the bitter cold that the interior has. This fact is important as you shouldn't need the engine block heaters, battery wrap heaters, transmission pan heaters etc that people in the interior need to keep their vehicles moving.

You will need winter clothing and believe it or not we had trouble buying good winter gear in the interior. I suggest you check out Cabellas on line. Everyone should have a parka, if you have kids then snow boots with an extra set of liners and at least two pairs of mittens or gloves for each family member. Also check out Ebay for long underwear. Uncle Sam is surplusing out a lot of cold weather gear and I have been able to buy new high performance underwear for pennies on the dollar.

I also recommend good rain gear for the 90 days of Alaskan Summer that you will have. If you like outdoor activities then you will have a blast in Alaska. If you don't then learn to like them because living in Alaska is all about living in Gods great outdoors. You can sit on your porch or lay in a snow bank and watch the Northern Lights dance across the sky, you will see Moose walk down the street, Bald Eagles flying over head, otters etc where you are going to live.

As Old Guard2 two says don't judge the Great Land from its cover. I thought Alaska would be like Switzerland or Norway, neat tidy homes etc its not. You will see beautiful homes and stunning log cabins then shacks with junk in the yards.

As soon as you have been there for a year become an Alaskan Resident and then you are eligible for payouts from Permanent Fund which payed out $2072 a family member for 2015.
