I'm just wondering about the order in which recruitment steps take place? I am scheduled in a few weeks to take my ASVAB and complete the physical exam. If I pass, what are the steps from there? I'm worried because I have bad credit including student loans and a few things that have not been paid off. I wasn't sure if they had already checked through with that when the application was sent off or not but it'd be completely disappointing to go through the ASVAB and anything else just to get shut down afterwards because of my credit. I have read a few other questions and answers about bad credit and it basically being a no go. So I just wonder why go through the trouble with the ASVAB and exams if they wait to do the credit check afterwards and know it'll probably be a deal breaker?

Student loans won't stop you. Are they current? When you say things not paid off... do you mean current with just an active balance or do you mean in collections? Collections are bad, that will be a show stopper. That is typically done after the ASVAB and MEPS. However, if going in the door you know you are going to possibly hit some wrinkles, talk to the recruiter. Have him run that stuff first, I'm sure they can. In the meantime, get things paid off. Student loans, depending upon the amount, I realize are not easy to write a check. But an outstanding credit card, an old cell bill, cable bill... clear it up. If not for the Coast Guard, for yourself. You want that monkey off your back and you want that gone now while you are young and can fully recover with no problems. You don't want to be 50 and have some account from fingerhut.com for $100 to pop up. Best of luck.

asvab, physical, background/credit check, boot camp date, dep swear in, ship. thats basically the gist of it. you will fill in the eqip sometime after the background check and the day you leave for boot camp.

as old guard said, collections are bad. i had a couple bucks i owed and my process stopped until i paid it off and showed proof to my recruiter that it was paid off. its bad to have stuff in collections because you cant move forward until its paid but they wont tell you "goodbye! dont even bother paying it!". if it pops up youre gonna have to take care of that.

i think that your initial paperwork is good and a recruiter thinks youre a good candidate. they dont send people to meps if they have tons of medical problems, attempted murder on their records and never passed middle school lol
