Hello! My son has just completed his ASVAB and physicals and passed with flying colors. He's in the "between" time now, and will probably will not sign in to DEP for a few months because of his/our particular circumstances.

We are currently stationed overseas as a family. He's working full-time here in the embassy and had to buy a ticket to go back to the states to meet his recruiter and do all the testing. He'll be returning here for work and is debating on either giving his notice and leaving relatively soon, or waiting till we all PCS out of here in August.

This forum is great! I'm a 26 year vet and my wife is an 8-year vet of the USAF. So interesting reading about the differences, and the similarities, between our services. I'm really excited for our son and a little bit jealous that he'll get to experience all this. The wife and I each have told him we'd do it all again in a heartbeat!

    Cheers all!

Welcome. Make sure he has a good list of places you have lived and traveled to so it makes it easier to fill out his security clearance forms. Also did he get a copy of the Helmsmen? If not he needs one to start studying his required knowledge. I recommend he starts a boot camp conditioning process now. Early to bed and early to rise.

Also go to the Cape May USCG site and you can read blogs about what the recruits are doing week by week. Remember knowledge is power.

I would just wait until you PCS, unless he's ok with working and living on his own until he enlists, if he can enlist, but we don't know his working circumstances. The whole process can take a few months from start to finish if there aren't any hiccups.

But I don't think it would be a stretch to say he would be in a good/better position to enlist now or in 6 months, we have alot of people getting out, so he doesn't need to worry about a timeline. And when I say alot, it's more like a healthy number in that we don't have a 96% retention rate right now and people are finally advancing again.
Take what you like and leave the rest behind.

Thanks all! My son already has a TS clearance for his job here in the embassy. So he has experience filling out the e-QIP and keeping a record of his travels!

He'll be home Tuesday morning, so I'll ask him about the Helmsman. We're also going to ask him about his PT preparation.

We typically give the Helmsman to recruits once they are scheduled for DEP.
