    Dealing with the war in iraq, besides guarding our borders cool, this might be a stupid question but does the coast guard go over there? i dont watch the news much, but i do go on the USGC site everyday and see there news, and havent seen n e thing.

    Ive never heard anything about the coast guard going over to Iraq or anything like that. I mean, its in the name. United States Coast Guard. They guard the US coast. I know theres stations in Guam and Hawaii but I dont think the cg goes to war. And were starting a draft???

    Some have went to Iraq to help the Navy, thats all I know of though not sure how long they stayed and/or if there still there.

    I am in the Army in Iraq and thinking about joining the coast guard just looking through the forum and saw this question, Yes I have seen some coasties here not many though they are at the ports in kuwait they do get deployed though not like the marines, Army and Navy I have been here ten months and only seen about five coasties. I am not sure how long their deployments are there was on coastie on my R&R flight back in january who said he'd been in Iraq for six months and he was going home. Maybe this helps?

    Most Coasties in Iraq are reservists or people who requested to go. The main reason is that the CG is the only branch that can board and ship anywhere in the world. So, you put a few Coasties on a Navy ship, fly the CG Ensign (flag) and now you can board any ship you want. So, as long as you go active duty and don't request to go (many get denied anyhow), you're pretty safe in the CG from Iraq.
