I am currently 27 years old, and will be 28 in August. My grandfather retired from the USCG and it is something that I have always wanted for myself, needless to say I have dragged my feet. I got somewhat serious about joining last year, but some things came up and couldn't. I went through MEPS and scored high enough on the ASVAB to qualify for any job. Since then the wife and I have purchased a new house and we have two car payments. My questions area as follow-

-Do the reserves still require the same income/debt ratio requirement that active duty do prior to joining?

-If I went reservist now, would transferring to active duty later on be an option?

-I am an aircraft mechanic for the federal government now, could I be an AMT in the reserves?

I apologize ahead of time if these similar questions have been answered previously, I could not find direct answers in "civilian language."

Thank you ahead of time for your input.

I think this covers all your questions, however, I am not an expert by any means. Aviation is closed to reservists. I am also 27 getting ready to turn 28. My recruiter told me if I don't go active now, I won't be able to later, however I believe it is possible to fill critical rates. I am sticking with the reserve. Waiting for my Depot reservation now. I did have to fill out an income/debt ratio form for reserves.

Correct. Aviation ratings are not open to Reservists.

-Do the reserves still require the same income/debt ratio requirement that active duty do prior to joining?

Yes and no. You still have to fill out the income/debt ratio. However, since you are in the reserves the percentage is higher. I believe you are allowed up to 80 percent.

-If I went reservist now, would transferring to active duty later on be an option?

There is a possibility. It is not impossible, but can be hard. There has to be a need of your "job" in the active duty side.

-I am an aircraft mechanic for the federal government now, could I be an AMT in the reserves?

No aviation billets in the reserve side.

Some programs yes, but not all.  For example, the RK split training program (boot one summer, A school the next summer) is 30%.
