Hello everyone, I am currently 22 years old and am currently an active duty Marine in the 2600 MOS field (Signals Intelligence). I am currently an E-4, but will be picking up E-5 shortly in the upcoming months. I have about a year and a half left on my contract, and by the time I am out I will be 24 years old with 5 years of active duty service. I'm currently well on my way to completing my associates degree in mathematics at which point I will hopefully move on to work towards a degree in electrical engineering within the time I have left on my contract (an eventual goal would be to apply for OCS at some point in the future, if possible).

My immediate goal upon finishing my Marine Corps contract is to (hopefully) enlist in the Active-Duty Coast Guard through the DEPOT program in the Intelligence Specialist (IS) rating. If I exit the Marine Corps sometime in November 2017 on terminal leave, what would be the soonest that I could apply for joining the Coast Guard? Would my MOS (2600 Signals Intelligence) fill the requirements to enter the USCG as an IS? Also, how often does the DEPOT program occur?

One more area of concern is the OCS requirements for becoming an officer in the future. Does the 27 year old age limit still apply to an active duty enlisted Coast Guard service member applying for OCS? What about the no more than 6 years of prior service? I'm already at 5 years of enlisted service by the time I am done with the Marine Corps, would my time serving Active Duty in the Coast Guard disqualify me?

Sorry in advance for all the questions, I'm just hoping to clarify some things before contacting a recruiter sometime in the near future.

Active duty time is fine at 5 years. The age limit for OCS is 31 and for a direct commission engineer it's 41 so you have plenty of time. Www.gocoastguard.com. Go there and look through OCS and DCE programs. If you enlist you may be able to come in as an IS at the E4 level, your training and experience will be looked at to determine that. One route I personally would consider, if commissioning is a goal, is to go to college full time with your GI Bill to finish your degree and apply for OCS and DCE for the USCG. They HIGHLY favor electrical engineering degrees. You could of course still enlist , work on your degree while in, and do the same thing.

Thank you for the informative response. I must have not looked hard enough at the recruiting website, those age limits make me feel a lot better. Considering I have  a school with an excellent engineering college in my home state, getting out and finishing my school may just be the better option in terms of advancing my future career.

My final question would be, how hard is it to go from the enlisted reserves to an active duty officer? In the USMC I know it is extremely difficult to go from enlisted reserves to enlisted active duty, but reserves enlisted to active duty officer is possible. Is it a similar story in the Coast Guard, or is it pretty much impossible to cross over from reserves to active duty once you are in, regardless of the enlisted/officer route?

It is very doable to do that.

Awesome. I will definitely have to contact a recruiter in the future to see what opening will be available in terms of the reserve. My last question would be, if I do get in the reserves, are you still limited to two dependents going from the reserves to becoming an active duty officer?

Yes. However, if your in the USCG already, generally dependent waivers are granted because as an officer you'll be making more.
