Coast Guard Recruit Who Collapsed After Training Run Dies By The Associated Press ·CAPE MAY, N.J. — Jul 6, 2016, 5:02 PM ET  A new Coast Guard recruit from Virginia who collapsed last week after a physical fitness run at a training center in New Jersey has died. A Coast Guard spokesman confirmed the recruit died Wednesday but said the cause of death hasn't been determined. The recruit was part of a class that started training late last month at the Coast Guard's center in Cape May. The recruit collapsed Friday morning just moments after completing a 1.5-mile run. Medical personnel on scene for the training immediately responded. The recruit was taken to a hospital. The Coast Guard says it will conduct a full investigation into the recruit's death, which is standard policy in such cases. The recruit's name and hometown haven't been released because relatives are still being notified about the death.

Here is some more information. One of our members husband is Delta-193.

    Friends,

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of one of our recruits from Recruit Company Delta 193. Seaman Recruit Aaron Redd passed away Wednesday after collapsing at the track, Friday. He collapsed after completing the 1.5 mile run that is part of forming week’s physical fitness assessment. SR Redd was attended to immediately by the trained medical staff that was on scene at the time and was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House, N.J., where he received medical attention up until his death.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Redd Family during this difficult time.

While we mourn the loss of our shipmate, we remain committed to ensuring that our recruits continue to train in a healthy and safe environment. We are also offering the support of our Critical Incident Stress Management Team members and the Chaplains for the recruits and active duty members that experience any difficulty processing the emotions associated with losing a shipmate.

The cause of his death is not known at this time, but the Coast Guard is dedicated to conducting a full and thorough investigation.

I took the name of the Recruit out of the above post. As far as everything that I have seen coming out of Cape May his name has still not been released publicly. I know his mother is a part of our Mom's Facebook group, I don't know if she or any other family members are part of this forum. But we don't want anyone finding out a name through social media. Yes, it has happened. What a horrific way to hear that news. If there comes a time, in the near or distant future, the CG puts out the SR's name, we can share it at that point. Until such time, let's just keep them in our thoughts and prayers and know that they have a long road of sadness in front of them. Let's not compound that grief.

I have now seen the release from the CG. I put SR Redd's name back into M1's post. If his family and friends are on this forum, please know you have our deepest sympathies.

Posted on the CG website. A letter from SR Redd's family....

The following message was provided by Seaman Recruit Aaron Redd's family. I am posting it per their request:

    Dear Coast Guard Family,

We need to express our gratitude for the outpouring of love, prayer, and support we've received from all of you. We are comforted.

We also want to share our thoughts with you so that your minds, hearts, and souls are at peace.

There are no words to describe how we feel. Those words simply do not exist.

What we can describe, what we can focus on, is the reality of the past few days.

Aaron fulfulled his dream of becoming a Coast Guardsman. He wanted to save lives. At 21, he found his purpose, his drive.

Some would say his life was cut short, we disagree. God is in control. God doesn't make mistakes. Not only is Aaron a Coast Guardsman, he saved a life; as his incredibly strong, beautiful heart now beats in another.

We are grateful that Aaron spent his last days with his fellow recruits and those who were there to train him.

We are grateful to the amazing nurses and doctors who were there night and day and provided excellent care.

To the United States Coast Guard, we are eternally grateful that Aaron is your brother. Thank you for standing guard over him. His mission is complete. Know that he stands guard now.

We are at peace. We are part of this United States Coast Guard family.

    With love and respect,

    The Redd Family
