Could someone tell me how long the wait time is between Depot graduation and A-school. Also, I emailed a recruiter about joining the reserves and he said I could only join if I took a critical rate due to my age(33).  Any truth to that?

First off, why would your recruiter lie to you? If that's what you're being told, then that's the current state of Reserve recruiting. As for wait time, that depends on what program you enlist under. Some have A School immediately after DEPOT graduation. Other programs have a break (could be several months) between graduation and the conviening of your A School.

Thanks for reply. Any advice on the best rate for law enforcement. I see a lot of talk b/t BM and ME. Also, does anyone have experience with the reserves in the Baton Rouge or New Orleans area.

Are you currently in law enforcement, or are you looking for a rating that will give you LE experience?

Like CPORJM the wait between DEPOT and A school depends on the program you enlist under. I personally waited almost a year because I planned out that way, but I have a few reserve shipmates that went right after boot camp.

If you do have LE experience, A school may be waived and upon DEPOT graduation you could be advanced. If you don't have LE experience my advice to you is since you are trying to be a reservist look for a small boats station as your home unit.

To answer your original question, BM is your better choice. It will give you more career options down the road. ME is very limiting as a Reservist. You'll either go to a Port Security Unit (PSU), which is primarily physical security and no LE exposure. The other option is that you'll go to a Sector Boarding Team, where you'll be doing security boardings of tankers, freighters, and the occasional cruise ship. Law enforcement in the CG is not like traditional LE. You won't be making arrests, etc. If you're looking for a long term career choice, BM would be the way to go.
