Hi All, I finally pulled the trigger and called my local recruiter. I explained my background and arranged an interview. My experience so far has been good, I have started working on filling in the prescreen and medical forms. Does anybody have any advice on further preparation for the interview? I have already started training to exceed the PFT requirements, I keep a copy of the helmsman on my phone so I can read it when I find a few minutes here and there. It seems at this stage that I'd qualify for Depot, obviously thats up to my recruiter to decide. I'm pretty much set on MST, its a pretty seamless link to my civilian job as a 1st mate aboard merchant ships.

Greetings and congrats! As far as the interview goes, business casual is appropriate dress. Your recruiter will be taking that opportunity to get to know you, see if you're a good fit for the CG, and learn about your professional background. As for your choice of rating, it seems to me that BM would be a better fit for you, based on your background as a First Mate. As an MST, you'd be doing vessel inspections, pollution response/cleanup, that sort of thing. This seems to be somewhat different than what you're doing on the civilian side.

    Best of luck!

Thanks for the response CPORJM, business casual it is! While I'd probably enjoy the BM rate immensely, believe it or not, within my civilian role, I spend more time doing safety inspections than anything else, with the vessels I work on being regularly subjected to USCG SOLAS inspections (I work for a famous Mouse...), we are in a constant state of readiness for surprise visits We also have regular pollution response drills and ballast management training etc, which is what made me think it would be a good fit for me - but like you said, this is the recruiter's opportunity to learn about me and my background and where I'd fit best. Once again, thanks for your input!
