Hello everyone! My boyfriend of over 2 years is leaving for bootcamp in December and its been really hard for me to think about. I know bootcamp is only 8 weeks but even after that he leaves again for A-School. We are both 19 years old and I am in college and work part time so its not super easy for me to travel yet. We are both 100% committed to making it work its just really scary to think about this entire process, especially the part where hes on and off the boat with limited communication. Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated!

The 8 weeks of boot camp will be the most difficult with limited contact, especially with Christmas and New Years. But that is something you might have to get used to anyway. It isn't that terrible. The days drag by, but the weeks really do fly! Does he have a guaranteed A School? If not, then he will go to the fleet and be there anywhere 6 to 36 months. that depends upon what school he wants and the time to get there when he puts his name on the list. If he does have guaranteed A School, communication during the day will be extremely limited, he will be in class. But in the evenings and weekends, when he doesn't have duty, in between times studying he can call or Skype or FaceTime. That isn't a problem.

As far as being on a ship, that isn't guaranteed either. He might be at a sector or a small boat station. He could be on a smaller cutter that goes out for less time each patrol. He could also be on a polar roller and be gone for 6-9 months at a time. There is no way of knowing or anticipating. Communication while on board ship isn't ideal but it isn't horrible. There have only been a handful of times when my son couldn't email out or he didn't receive emails in. It isn't the same as talking on the phone or being in person but it isn't the end of the world either. My daughter-in-law lived in Connecticut for almost 18 months while my son was living in Seattle. He was on a ship, they managed.

Don't stress over this. If your life is meant to be spent together forever, this is just a drop in the bucket for time. If he is worth waiting for, you will. If you are worth waiting for, he will. Stressing will not make it any easier for either of you. Just have fun these last couple of months before he head's out.

Thank you so much for responding it means a lot to me. And for A-School he is going to be in Virginia for a machine technician which is in March, so he has a month after boot camp where he is there in Virginia but not in class yet. And the toughest part right now is just not knowing where he will be stationed! Did your son marry while in the service? Thanks so much again.

You're welcome. Yes, Colin and Danielle met while he was stationed in Boston and she was there in college. He went to A School in Petaluma, California. She graduated college, he finished A School. He went to Seattle, she went home to Woodbury, CT and started her job as a pharmacist. About a year later they were married in Connecticut and she moved to Seattle. Now they live on Staten Island. It isn't easy, there were plenty of times Danielle wanted to be closer to Colin and Colin wanted Danielle closer. But they did what they had to do and it all worked out just as it was supposed to.
