My recruiter has informed me that I was disqualified during the medical prescreening process, he told me that I could possibly continue to process if I signed a waiver and some other forms. I was told by my recruiter that the process would take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks. My recruiter also said that if I get approved for a waiver before going to MEPS, I have a high chance of getting into the USCG. I scoured the internet to see if this had happened to anyone else and if I should be worried. I couldn't find anything regarding this topic. If anyone knows anything about this process please let me know

Its not uncommon at all for people to need waivers. When the Coast Guard isn't recruiting heavily and has high numbers, waivers are hard to come by. When they need people some waivers are easier to get. It all just depends on what the waiver is for and if they really need people. If the Coast Guard has somebody with your qualifications but doesn't need a waiver, for the most part, its more logical to not grant the waiver. If they need people and its something small, then a waiver might be granted. Two to four weeks seems pretty quick to have a waiver approved but I think that depends on a lot of variables.
I'm not 100% sure how it works when you get a waiver and then go to MEPS. I would assume that the MEPS doc can still say no or they can say yes. It all just depends on what the waiver is for and if people are needed. There are tons of reasons for waivers and some of them are more severe than others. Clear as mud?

Thanks for the reply, my recruiter said that he has gotten waivers recently for people who have conditions way worse than me. I was looking at the medical manual and I meet the medical standards as far as I can tell. Any idea on why I need a waiver if I meet the standard?

Without knowing the condition and the standard, and we are not asking you to tell that, there is no way we can determine what might be the thought process. Even with that info, we still might not be able to determine anything. Just go with what your recruiter suggests. He has all the particulars.

Thanks Old Guard, my recruiter didn't seem too concerned about it and I shouldn't stress out over something I can't control. I have done what I can so it is up to MEPS to make a decision.
