Hi. I am new to this forum and have been scouring the internet for any info I can for CG info.

I want to join, that is for sure. I am beyond the thinking about it phase. One of the most commen phrases of advice I have always heard handed out to someone wishing to join the Armed Forces is "Do your homework before talking to a recruiter". So what homework should I be doing and where should I be looking? What mindset is best to go in to a recruiting office with? How do I get what I would like while still applying to the "needs of sevice"?

I am in a situation in life where I need to get back on track. I was in a nine year radio career till I decided to move to Florida. I have been living here for about four years and stuck in a themepark. I am very board, unchallenged, and unmotivated. Don't get me wrong, I am in a great leadership role with a dencent enough paycheck. I am no lackie, that is for sure. Yet, I feel myself getting dumber as each day passes.

I am very recently engaged. Big day is May 7, 2005. So this means I am also ready to start a family. Which means I need a career with a little more job secutity then a company with a reputation for lay offs. I would really like to know that a retirement plan is going to be there for me. Or at least a job that will provide me with the paid training to be an entapanaur (sp) of the sea.

The biggest apeal to the CG for me is that it is on the water. All my life I have loved boating. Granted, Iv never opperated anything over twenty feet, But thats what career in the CG will give me. Expereince with big boats!

A few more questions. I have been to a few different sites and am confused on the age requirments. Some say 27 is the max age and others say 35 is the max age. Which is it? What are the PT requirments to get in? Once you make it through basic and get stationed out of your area is there a base where you can move you loved ones to? As I said, I live in Florida. As ideal as it would be for me to be stationed here I am sure this is a popular pick. Being that I would be fresh on the totem pole I am assuming chances are good I would end up elsewhere. How would signing up now affect my wedding plans? Can you request a specific short time off? Or is that a question I would get laughed at for? These are all quesions I could have answered by a recruiter I am sure, remember, I am trying to collect all the knowlage I can before talking to a recruiter though.

Thank you very much for any info you can provide me with in advance.

    Ted

It sounds like you have alot going on in your life right now. I too am looking into going into the USCG and am doing my homework on it before talking to a recruiter. I want to be fully sure that this is what I want to do before I have someone tell me that this is what I want to do and get sucked into it. At first I was set on joining the USAF, everyone told me that was the best branch but living in Orlando FL my whole life and being 10 minutes away from the beaches of the gulf coast now, I cant see myself not living on the water. And living in Orlando my whole life, knowing personally theme parks are, I do think you are making a wise choice. As far as answering your questions.... PT requirements are

    PUSH-UPS: male: 29 female: 23 (in 1 minute)
    SIT-UPS: male: 38 female: 32 (in 1 minute)
    1.5 MILE RUN: male:12:51 female: 15:26 (minutes)
SIT AND REACH: male: 16.50 female: 19.25
COMPLETE SWIM CIRCUIT: Jump off a 5 ft. platform into the pool, swim 100 meters, and tread water for 5 minutes.

    And the age thing:

Be a United States citizen or nationalized to be a Coast Guard officer. To enlist, you must be a United States citizen or a Resident Alien. Be between the ages of 17-27 for Active Duty. If you are 17, you'll need parental consent. Reservists must be between 17-39, Prior service personnel should contact their local recruiter. Have a high school diploma. GEDs are accepted in special circumstances. Have no more than two dependents. Pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test. Pass a military entrance medical exam. Be the type of person who wants to serve the public on or around the water

I got all this information on http://www.gocoastguard.com/faq.html ...i hope i was of help.. good luck with everything! And for Gods sake, GET OUT OF THAT THEME PARK!! =P

If you exceed the age requirement, you can probably get a waiver for it, just ask your recruiter, if you need one. Most services will give you a waiver for a few of their requirements. Keep in mind you may have to take a cut in pay to start out, but as long as you perform well, you should move up the ranks quickly enough to get back where you are now and beyond. Your job satisfaction should improve immediately, though.

What I think that you should do if not already is go to www.military.com and take the practice ASVAB tests. I am in the process of joining and my recruiter advised me to take the practice tests and to also go to a local library and pick up an ASVAB test booklet with information. I am 18 years old and wanted to join the airforce but decided that the Coast Guard is a lot better for me. I am excited and cannot wait.
Good Luck to you, email me if you want
