Age limit has been increased to 32 for active duty without the need to choose a guaranteed A-School. Also, geographic location is being offered to half of all recruits. This is for this recruiting year; FY17. |

Just for clarification: does this meant guaranteed geographic location at time of enlistment, or when they submit their wish list during week 5, they'll be guaranteed one of their choices? |

They can request a district (not D11, D14 or D7) and it will be approved or denied when their reservation is submitted to CGRC. They will sign the annex as part of their contract prior to departing for basic. This isn't a tool that should be advertised to all interested recruits due to our limited ability to guarantee to only 50%... it is at the recruiter and RIC discretion for helping the office meet their mission.

Just a warning to those who are enlisting in their late 20s and early 30s. You supervisor will probably be younger than you. In fact, there is a good chance he or she joined when they were 18 years old out of high school and already have 4 or 5 years under their belt. Likewise, most people in your age group are going to be mid-grade Petty Officers (E5-E6) if not already Chief Petty Officers and are 5 to 10 years from retiring. You WILL be treated like a junior member of the Coast Guard and expected to "do your time" in the less desirable positions, such was taking out the trash, swabbing the decks and cleaning dishes (as we all did). If you are OK with this, I look forward to seeing you in the fleet.

Is there any official link or statement from the Coast Guard regarding the guaranteed geographic locations for half of all recruits? I haven't been able to find anything online regarding this, outside of these forums. |

Speak to your recruiter. There is probably very little to nothing available online. Recruiters share information that is allowed to be released on here. But it is rarely released to the public. It can be discussed, it just isn't publicized. |

For the age thing, maybe its just my unit, but I am much older on the spectrum as a nonrated and I have no issues with my younger bosses. In fact I respect them just as much as the older enlisted. |

What if your recruiter failed to mention this to you?

It might not be available in that particular area. The post does say for HALF of recruits. Also, when did you begin recruiting? Maybe this wasn't something offered when you started the process. Don't be so quick to judge. If you feel you heard information, and I trust this information completely since it is posted by a former recruiter, speak to your recruiter and ask. It isn't that difficult. |

Like OG2 said. You could ask. It is fairly new and a recruiter does not have to offer it so just keep that in mind. |

Does the age limit apply to prior CG members wanting to come back? |

As far as the age goes, is this just for FY17 or will this continue? Due to some enlistment standards it may be 2019 before I'm eligible and I'll be nearly 30. |

Constructive age is available for prior service members without having to do a waiver for active duty. The non-prior service age waivers will likely continue to be utilized in FY18, but the operations plan will be coming out in the next month or two and that will be out guidance. |
