    Hello all,

I just talked to my recruiter about joining the reserves today, and he said something that I thought was a bit weird. He said that while I can apply for any specific job opening in my state, they don't have to give me that job and can instead place me into any job that's needed. I always thought that going reserves guaranteed you your job. Could someone clear this up for me?

Sounds like your recruiter is not familiar with the Reserve program. You'll be offered an assignment in your rating at a unit within the Reasonable Commuting Distance (100 miles/round trip). If nothing's available locally, you can opt to go to a unit outside that 100 mile distance (at your cost).

Thank you for your answer. He told me that you hve to put in two picks for units and assignments, and that you might not even get one of those two. Is the picking two assignments part true?

I've never heard that before. People are recruited into the Reserve to fill a specific billet (position) at a specific unit. You should know your unit and billet (and A School if applicable) when you sign your contract. You might try reaching out to AirDale13 on tis forum. He's currently a recruiter and might be able to clarify this more.

When I was in the process of enlisting, I remember filling out a form with my top two picks. I remember the recruiter showing me a list of "jobs" available in the area and told me to pick two. Thats exactly what I did. He did mention that there was a possibility that I could get one or the other and we had to wait from the detailer. He also mentioned to me that I had no obligations yet and could turn down the assignment. Maybe this is what your recruiter means. I was lucky enough that I got one of the jobs I picked
