I'm sure you're all good and sick of hypothetical enlistment questions but I'm afraid I have another one. On my honor, I swear that I have already ransacked all of about.com's CG info, read the official sites, searched this site for similar questions and read the Spouse's Handbook completely, if that makes you feel better.
I am 26 years old, I have been married for four years. I live in Brooklyn, NY. My husband has a good job in Manhattan.
I am considering enlisting in the CG, but I'm a little concerned about having to relocate.
I am not so keen about living on base, but I've read about off-base housing and housing reimbursements. The local base is Staten Island. I would be happy to make that commute from brooklyn if that is a possibility.
This is where I get confused a bit.If I enlisted for active duty, how much say would I get over where I was stationed or where I live?
If you had to quantify the level of influence I would have, would you say I had the ability to simply suggest a preference or would I be able to completely veto an unwanted move? How much of a "tough luck" factor do we have here?
I don't want my husband to move. I love our apartment. He loves his job. I know that I would need to go to sea and that I would go away for bootcamp and training.
I heard one person explain that you do a tour for a couple of months and then you're on land for a couple of months, but I have not seen any information on the web to substantiate that. That sort of arrangement would be fine by me.
I just don't want to sign up for three years and spend two and a half of them long-distance with my husband. I'm quite sure that the phone bills would easily negate my paycheck.
If you've bothered to read this far- Thanks! I really appreciate all information I can get.
