    i have been really thinking of joining the coast guard.i've graduated from h/s about 3 years ago and went to a technical school for about 15 months, and now im just working full time as a mechanic and it feels like im not really going anywhere and stuck doing the same thing everyday and im getting kinda tired. need to do something else and get out of the house...but i have a few ??'s about the coast guard/basic training... 
    1)first of all how hard is basic training/bootcamp? i am not over weight or nothing like that but im not a big sports guy or excercise much.will it be hard on me or will i get through(im 5'10/about 150lbs.) im very openminded and know i can do this!!
     
    2) i heard that if u do score high in the ASVAB test that u could pick out where youll be stationed. true?
     
    3) if i get stationed away from home(like cali. if home is maryland) how will i get my belongings there if i need to like my car and if possible pwc?? is this even possible?
     
    4)if i do get stationed near home, will i be able to go home often or not?
     
    and finally will i receive payment while im in training?? and when will payment start if i join?
     
    thanx so much in advance for all your replies...really need all information i need b4 i see the recruiter!!!

    Hey, just trying to find so info on how to join the Coast Guard, I will be 18 in October, and school isn't really my thing. Can someone tell me where I go, I heard that I have to go to Portland to talk to someone. Don't they have recruiters in smaller towns? Where do I start?

    Eric,
      You do get paid while in boot camp.However most of the money is held until you graduate. You won't need much cash anyway in basic.
      If you do well in boot camp you may get to chose your location.Remember though you'll be competing with many other people.Also billets ( locations) are dictated by the needs of the service.
    Boot camp can be very demanding physically. Lots of running,push ups,running and more push ups. However it sounds as though you'd have no problem!
    There is also class work and practical training.Coast Guard history,marine saftey,fire safety,pollution controls and more.
    You  will march,march and march some more.This may seem nuts at times but it helps train people into becoming a team unit.This quality may save you or your shipmates life someday. Not being dramatic, being accurate.
    Once out of boot camp workdays can be long but generally liberty(time off) is also fair. 30 days paid vacation a year is pretty good too.
    I'm not sure about moving your possesions. I carried very little while I was in so I can't answer that.Sorry.
     Best of luck,it is a very rewarding experience.

    You're most welcome. It is a big decision don't take it lightly. Although the Coast Guard is not technically in the Defense Department ( it is Homeland Security)during war time it can be enlisted to become part of the Navy. There were Cutters in Viet Nam which did see action. Consider that too.

    I am considering joining the USCG.  However in my past I have made mistakes that im not proud of.  I'm currently on probation for a Class A misdemenor, with 7 months remaing.  My question will that disqualify me from joining?  I REALY, REALY HOPE NOT! Hopefully my past will not hold me back on my visions of my future.

    I am currently in the Army, waiting for the results of an accessions board, my knowledge of the Coast Guard specifics is limited. But having been in the Army for 9+ years, I do know a little about the military. If you were looking at joining the Army (don't-go Coastie instead!) then you would need what is called a moral waiver. You may need something like that for the Coast Guard as well, your recruiter will be able to tell you what you need. For everyone in this post, I highly recommend the Coast Guard, I have heard nothing but great things about it from the 10+ people I have talked to about it who have been in for a number of years. It offers the best of all of the Armed forces in the manner of living conditions, job satisfaction, and many more areas that count. It is also a steady job that, given proper motivation and determination, you can excel at and recieve credit for your hard work.
