No idea if this is a good place to talk about a foreign military, but you did say "Literally anything"!
I don't understand the French Foreign Legion thing, or why people sometimes leave their home country to join it. Why wouldn't they just join their own country's military, or if they don't want to serve their home country, but don't plan on becoming a citizen of another country - why not just join a Private Military firm?
Anyone here have any thoughts? |

Because they are running away from something, like a bad romance or maybe jail time. I don't know I've never met one of these warriors. |

I agree that most are probably escaping something. Maybe some just are not qualified to serve in the military of their home country. Getting into the FFL is a little easier as far as educational requirements, they don't have any. So someone here, they have dropped out of high school, realize they are on a path to nowhere. The military seems to be a decent choice for employment, training, security, pay, medical but the US military won't take them. The French Foreign Legion will. That person doesn't necessarily want to be a citizen of France but when they come home, 5 years military training and experience. Looks awfully good on a resume. I believe there are some 200+ countries that have people currently in the FFL. It has to have something appealing. Also, someone has to defend France. God knows the French don't seem concerned. LOL |

Well, the stereotype says all the French can do on a battlefield is retre- I mean launch a strategic attack in the opposite direction. |

Just a reminder if the King of France hadn't gotten involved with our American Revolution we probably would be drinking warm beer and have bad teeth. LOL. |

Yeah, we owed a debt to France's monarchy, however the French Republic wasn't as helpful at first |

Just conjecture on my part. Perhaps enlistment in the Legion might be more appealing then military service in a home country that is politically unstable and economically weak? Don't know. Just a thought... |

The FFL has a long and glorious history. You want to talk about doing things with nothing to use to complete the mission? They’ve BTDT. They don’t retreat. They don’t say NO. They never quit. They are harder to join than you think. Full background with INTERPOL searches, must pass a Med/Psych battery, no felonies, minimal crime history, can’t be on the run, etc. Oh, and you MUST be able to prove your identity to get through the door. Imagine showing up to MEPS, and spending the next three weeks just processing...think you could do it? |

Never thought of this before - you might be on to something there. |

Lots of countries have a smaller military, or never use their military. Let's say a Swiss person is interested in action, the FFL would be a good spot. |
