Hello everyone, just curious what week 1 medical is like? I've read plenty of threads that covered it but what is it like now? Do we have to get blood pressure and the vision test done again? I know there will be plenty of vaccinations and shots too.

    Thanks

They do not do another physical at Cape May, so you will not have vision, hearing, blood pressure, etc. checked in that regard.

However, everyone has to have a dental screening the first week, and they check everyone's blood pressure prior to that screening. If it is high there's a good chance they will refer you to medical.

Okay, thank you! What do you mean when you say refer to medical? It's unlikely for that to happen but just in case, what would they do at medical?

From what I remember medical was the worst part of week 1. Tons of standing in line, waiting for things to be taken care.

If you have glasses, you will be issued the BCG's in place of your glasses and will have dental done. They will schedule your teeth removal if you need it probably then or at least tell you to have them taken out.

Medical is a long week. Be prepared to read and reread your Helsman over & over again. Long lines, standing around, or sitting, remember don't fall asleep. If you have glasses you'll be issued 02 pairs in maybe Week 02-03. Medical is like your doctor's office. If you're sick, injuried, need medical attention that's where you will go.

For those who needed teeth removal, was in done in boot camp or did they just tell you that you'd have to have it done ASAP?

Scheduled, as in not done that day? Would you know if it would be the same for oral surgery? Anyone have experience with this?

You seem to be really worried about teeth removal. If they need to be removed, the Coast Guard will remove them while in boot camp. It will be done by a dental professional that knows what they are doing and you will receive all of the proper medications and care. They aren't just going to hold you down and rip your teeth out. Don't worry about when things get done or how long its going to take or who is going to do it. It will happen, on the Coast Guard's time and they will tell you what you need to know when you need to know it at boot camp. Worry about stuff like that is just going to stress you out.
You will get poked, and prodded, and yelled at, and taught. You will get fed and your needs will be met. You will probably not get as much sleep as you would like and you will get told what to do and when to do it. Worry about the small details will just make things harder.

I am more curious than worried. I was just wondering how that part of the process works in the CG. I appreciate your response. I know what to expect as far as everything else as I have been through Army boot camp and a police academy.

Just a quick follow up, does this slow you down in any way? As in, is it like being reverted? I still have my wisdom teeth and don't want to be reverted at all. Thanks.

Generally that will not cause reversion. Can you develop an infection or some side effect that could revert you?? Of course something COULD happen. But more than 98% it likely will not happen. You'll be fine.

Any one who shows up to boot camp with their wisdom teeth will have them removed if there is time. A good percentage of my company had their wisdom teeth removed. None of them developed complications or got reverted because of it. So no it does not slow you down. It will get you extra attention from the CC's though when your face swells up after the procedure. Everyone who had them removed looked like chipmunks for a week. The bright side is that you will be on light duty for a couple days so you cant do any IT.

Not everyone that shows up automatically has them removed. The majority, yes. All, no.

Hey! From my understanding, they're pretty much going to pull out your Wisdom Teeth, and give you Motrin for the pain. I'm sure they'll put you under Anesthesia for the removal, so no need to worry there. They'll give you a band for your arm, meaning you don't have to exercise for a few days, but you'll still have to march everywhere. I'm not sure if this is 100% correct, I was told this from the hygienist at my local dentist office; her husband is in the Coast Guard.

But if I were you, I would get your Wisdom teeth pulled ASAP. Number one, it's gonna hurt for a few days and you're probably not going to want to do much other than rest.

If you've already been to MEPS, I DO NOT suggest you getting your wisdom teeth pulled. That is surgery. That can and will change your ship date. Any change in health status, other than a simple cold, could effect your ship date. Let them do it in Cape May. They know what they're doing, they've done it hundreds of times and will do it hundreds more. Personal opinion hearing about people's experiences... If you are home, you feel weak or are treated weak. In boot camp, you are in such a mind set of my team works together, I have to be there with my team. You take the day in the hospital but then you are ready to jump back in with your shipmates. At least that's the way it has seemed to me from others talking. Just let it happen in Cape May
