Is there a way to cancel my active duty contract and immediately resign into the reserves?

You can always ask your recruiter. However, something to know about the Reserves is that there has to be an identified billet for you. In other words, you're being recruited to fill a specific position at a specific unit. If there are no jobs you want in al unit within the Reasonable Commuting Distance (100 miles round trip), then you don't get recruited, or you agree to travel outside the RCD at your own expense. Compare this with the Active Duty side where you enlist and then a billet is found for you after boot camp.

Hello.. I have a question about reserve.. my husband went to a recruiter today and he was told that not many reserve jobs available especially as a Health Technician which is what he was interested in doing. He was offered to become active as a Cook but since medical field is his background he asked if he can do that at first (cook) and then transfer back to medical field but the recruiter told him it doesn't work that way.. isn't it you can pick and choose when there is opportunity to do so? How can you know when a job(s) you are applying for opens up? Will the recruiter inform the recruit then ship for boot camp? Or can you be shipped for boot camp while waiting for the job you really want? Just curious.. thanks in advance.

One cannot move back and forth between jobs at will. That would require sending someone back to school and having them start all over again in terms of their specialty. If he really wants to be a Reserve HS (Health Services Technician), then he should wait it out until an opening is available. If he wants to go active as an HS, then he enlists, goes to boot camp, goes to his first unit, and then puts his name on the HS A school list when he's eligible to do so.
