Hello, I am currently in the process of deciding whether or not to pursue my dream of serving in the Coast Guard.  After much research, I have discovered that a previous injury is probably disqualifying.  I currently have two screws (no plates) in my malleolus from an accident 8 years ago.  I know that the language says that retained hardware is not disqualifying if not subject to trauma.  However, I was told that hardware in either the malleolus or olecranon are disqualifying and not waiverable due to them being directly under the skin and subject to trauma.  Any thoughts or experiences are greatly appreciated. Thank you

I would gather up all the paperwork you have on it and ask a recruiter to submit everything up to MEPS for a pre-screen.

I second Andisoss. Assume nothing and be up front with your recruiter about your medical issues. I have hardware in my wrist and was simply asked to submit papers from my doctor saying the injury is healed. No one at MEPS batted an eye about it, although I did document the surgery scar on the scar/tattoo form. You never know until you try.

Your interpretation of the medical standards and MEPS' interpretation may be two very different things. If you go off your assumptions, you may miss out on a great career. Gather the documents, submit them and let MEPS make the call

Thank you very much for your time and insights. I have appointments set with my surgeon and a recruiter the next few weeks. Very much looking forward to giving all I have and leaving nothing on the table. Thanks again
