I am currently an AD AF officer flying HH-60 helicopters but am interested in switching to the CG. I am looking for some actual info on life in the CG and what I can really expect. I will need to get more info from a recruiting center for the DCA program when I get home but for now I am looking for real life info on the CG.. 1. What can I expect for career progression as an officer. Are the chances pretty good of making it to a 20 year retirement or is the CG removing people before they make their time. If your not moving up are you getting removed? 2. How often are you PCSing? 3. Is the retirement the same as AD AF. 20 years--50% base pay. 4. What kind of deployment cycle is there. I do not know much about the CG. I am interested in flying Helos for SAR and any information on day to day life in the CG would be appreciated. I know every branch deals with their problems I would like to know the downsides of the CG and especially within the Helicopter rescue units. Thanks to any response!

To answer my own questions for anyone that might look at this and want the info...

    1. From what I have been told chances are pretty good of making 0-4 and it sounds like you will being able to fly and ride out 0-4 to twenty years if that is what you are looking for. If you want to push for it and put some effort in you can make 0-5 and retire from that..
    2. PCS is the same as any other branch with a little more chance to stay in an area for a little longer. hh-60 assignments are looking at a 3-4 year stay.. closer to 4 with the potential to stay at a place for five years. A guy I talked to has moved 3x since 2004.
    3. Retirement is the same as any other branch. Only thing I am not sure of is if you switch now if you will be put into the new retirement system or if you can still opt for the old retirement system. I had the choice and chose the old system, if I switch not sure if that will transfer over.
    4. Doesn't sound like there is much of a deployment cycle. some standard TDYs and the chance for a couple short "deployments" 20-45 days. out of the year. as a helo guy there is a chance to be put on a cutter and deploy with them, it sounds like you would be looking at a 3-5 month deployment.

Sounds pretty awesome to me and I know I plan on making the switch! If any of this sounds incorrect please correct it.
