I'll start by saying that I am in the very early stages of researching the Coast Guards DCIO program. I'm currently an Army Captain / Intelligence Officer coming up on 8 years of service and to be honest, I'm getting tired of watching my kids grow up via skype from Afghanistan. I've always been interested in the Coast Guard, especially the Great Lakes area. I grew up on Lake Superior and the thought of making it back to that area is very appealing to my family and I. Something the Army could never offer us apart from a lucky ROTC assignment for a brief period. My degree is in Criminology, so not STEM as the preferred preference, but I'm hoping my experience and evaluations throughout my Army career will compensate. Tracking the next deadline for the application process is 07AUG, so I'll likely give that a go. I've started reading the O-JAK and see in 2016 that 19 "Packages Sent to Panel" with a 42.11% selection rate. 75% of them current CG members. Not sure how competitive I would be but if anyone has expertise or could point me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated. I used a similar forum to this when applying / preparing for Army OCS and it was an amazing resource.
Some general questions I'll be searching this forum for answers for include:
Typical assignment locations for CG Intelligence Officers?
Ship or shore duty?
Intelligence Officer positions in Duluth or Grand Marais, MN?
How desirable is it to serve at these locations and how much of a say would I have in getting there? (I've been in the Army for 8 years and I assume it's similar in the CG... Meaning little to none, but I can hope.)
I understand I'd drop to an O-2 grade but how long before I'll be eligible for promotion back to O-3?
Appreciate any and all feedback.
