So I'm not quite sure what "marrying" into the coast guard entails. Everything I have read about military spouses is that spouses generally move around a lot. We are supposed to get married soon (and that is literally all I have ever wanted in the entire world) but will getting married mean I have to give up my spot at Stanford? Or if I do as planned and go to Stanford, does that mean I will be living apart from my husband years on end?

You don't have to give up your spot at Stanford, but your spouse may not be able to get stationed near you after boot camp. The first assignment is really crap shoot. You should both talk to a recruiter and decide what's best for both of you.

Your spouse is going to boot camp for 8 weeks then to a duty station for 6 months to 2 years depending on what rate they are interested in or that timing can change if they take a guaranteed critical rate when they enlist. Then after school they will go to the next assignment and you can figure they may be there two years at least.

You are not marrying the Coast Guard you are marrying a person whose job is being a Coast Guardsman. In my opinion a military spouse must understand that the mission comes first in order to have a happy marriage. If your spouse is on a cutter they may be gone on and off for 6 out of 12 months a year. The time apart really depends on the type of job the spouse is doing. Some people are gone for weeks at a time while others not so much.

You and your future spouse must decide what is best for you as a couple! Someone is going to sacrifice. Do you go to Stanford and get your education and probably not be co located with your spouse, wait until graduation before getting married or get married and become a military gypsy and try to start and finish a degree before its time to move.

Just an example of my son's first 15 months and it probably is typical give or take a few months for the majority of first time enlisted people. Left Texas for 8 weeks of Boot Camp, graduates Boot Camp and assigned to a cutter in St Pete Florida. Spent 9 months at St Pete with three months of sea time. Then to Yorktown Va for 14 weeks of A School. Now he is in Wa., and should be there until his enlistment is over. Hope the timeline helps. You probably could get two semesters completed at Stanford before your spouse arrives at there first long term duty station.
