    Just wondering as I am considering joining the CG Reserve. What exactly are the responsibilities of a BM? If stationed at a small boat station would I be able to pilot the boat? Is the job mostly doing preventative maintenance and any necessary repairs? Also, it sounds like a BM could be in a leadership position. Is this true?

    On a typical drill weekend, what can I expect? I know that the answer will probably vary depending on where I am doing drill. The top of my wish list would be Station Wrightsville Beach, in NC. I live inland 2 hours from the closest Coast Guard Station and that one is the closest. The next closest Station would probably be 3 hours.<!-- Edit -->

    I AM A US NAVY BM THEREFORE I CANT TELL YOU MUCH OF THE RESERVIST LIFE OR THE DETAILS OF A COASTIES LIFE.  WHAT I CAN DO IS TELL YOU ABOUT THE BM RATING.  YES, BM'S ARE LEADERS.  AND A QUALIFICATION FOR BM'S IS A COXSWAIN(SMALL BOAT PILOT).  WHAT IT ALL COMES DOWN TO IS HOW EAGER YOU ARE TO LEARN AND DO THE TASKS NEEDED.  IF YOU KNOW YOUR RULES OF THE ROAD, ALL YOU WOULD HAVE TO DO IS FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH SMALL BOAT HANDLE.  SINGLE PROP, DOUBLE PROP, COUNTER TURNS OR IN THE SAME DIRECTION;  EACH CONFIGURATION HANDLES DIFFERANTLY AND HAS ITS PRO AND CONS.  EITHER WAY,  NO ONE CAN STOP A PERSON WHO ASKS QUESTIONS AND IS EAGER TO LEARN.  REMEMBER  ANYONE CAN BE ANY RATE BUT ONLY GOD CHOOSES A BOATSWAIN MATE.
