    One piece of advise that I want to share with all new recruits is before leaving be sure to have a Power Of Attorney, POA, in place. My son currently serving on the USCG Bertholf is having his bank account accessed with out his knowledge or permission. If we had a POA in place I could help take care of all of the logistics (canceling card, ordering a new debit card....) for him when he is at sea. The credit union is well meaning and I totally understand about privacy, but simple account inquires on his behalf are impossible. Without the POA all I can do pass information along via email and those few and far between phone calls.

    It is probably easier for married coasties with joint accounts, but those who are single should seriously consider a POA.

    I agree! I did this for my son before he went into boot camp. It's the best thing I could have done for him.

    When my son opened a debit account we put my wife's name on the account also so we would have access to the acct. if needed. Has made things easier for all of us. Something to consider before they leave for BC.

    agreed. my daughter put my name on her account for this very reason. since she is in alaska it is kinda hard for her to take care of banking matters.

    of course, this is also a useful tool to know how responsible your new coastie is managing their finances!!! lol

    Highly recommended to get POA from me too - the wifey & I arranged it with our lawyer last night, so we're covered for both medical and financial issues!
