I'm curious what this route may look like for someone after they become enlisted. What are the requirements? I am currently 31 and shipping to boot camp soon and just curious what my options are in regards to pursuing a commissioned rate in the future? Any advice...insight..etc...

At 31 years old, you're too old for OCS-R (cut off age 31),or the Coast Guard Academy (cut off age 22). OCS-T has a cut off of 35, but also a requirement of a minimum of four years of service, so you won't make that either.  As a side note, "rate" is used when referring to enlisted, not officers.  Best of luck

You will not be old to advance through the enlisted ranks and make Warrant Officer. From there you can possibly attend the Warrant to Lieutenant program. So you can still get there but I believe this is the only path. Do you already have your degree?? The minimum of 4 years service can be waived if you already hold your Bachelor's.

CPORJM, your input is much appreciated. Old Guard2, I do have a Bachelors degree. So there seems to be some a chance of attending OCS-T. That's great news!

You need to be an E5 to apply. Depending on what rate you choose that could be easy or difficult to accomplish in 4 years.

You don't have to wait for that minimum time and E5 rank to apply to OCS. Get on it young man, you can apply at any time. Doesn't mean you'll be accepted but put yourself out there. A very good friend of mine, her son went to boot and applied to OCS at the same time. He finished boot, he was about 6 months at his unit, got the word for OCS. He went there for 17 more weeks of forced fun. He is an LT stationed in Japan now. What's the worst that happens? You become a successful enlisted man and have a great career that way.

You can request an age waiver for OCS-R which you already qualify for if you have your degree. I received a waiver at 33.

My advice is to start applying ASAP if you know you want to go.
