So I am set on joining the CG reserve and have my interview set up for next week to get all the paper work rolling (clean health bill, no tattoos, recruiter said I should be able to get into the RA program). As I did more research into the USCG I started to realize this may be a career that I would like to pursue full time (I am interested in OS and MST). I am 31 years old with a few degrees under his belt ( none that would get me into a officer program, but that would definitely be something I would like to pursue if I became AD) and recently married. I have a steady career/job right now but I have always been interested in the armed services in order to serve my Country and to be a part of something Great. Is going AD at my age wise to do? I know the cut off was just raised to 32 so that is why I am asking of anyone else has experience in a situation like this. Not going to lie, I am a little bit nervous posting this and hope I do not offend anyone by asking these questions.

Its not an offensive question and only you know if its wise or not pertaining to your life. Your experience as an older person getting into the Coast Guard will be different than some. I got in at 28 and don't have a problem. As long as you know that some of your bosses and supervisors will be a good deal younger than you and they have a lot they can teach you.

    Thanks Mkelly for the response.
I have no problem at all taking orders and learning from those younger than me. I think you are right I need to definitely sit down and figure it out. Possibly my interview with the recruiter will reveal Career opportunities in the CG that I have yet to realize.

I went in at 29 and I felt like as its only helped me career wise. Sure, all of my first line supervisors have been younger than me but they weren't idiots. Plus most of them have bewn doing the job longer than me. I think it puts you at a great advantage.

I was up in the air on active or reserve as I had a career as well. My recruiter made me take over a week to think about my life changing move. Don't regret it at all.

Links are broken to "A" school waiting lists (FYI)

Have a possible AST school candidate so was just looking up some intel to educate myself after the rate itself (requirements to get in, etc). But got him setup to meet with some AST's over at A/S Detroit's shop so I'll be making the trip with him and his dad (to get them on the base). Been retired for 18 years so I'm sure lots has been refined.

But seeing how many of you non-rates had to wait a long time to go off the your school is sad. I spent a year at a small boat station before going off the HM school. Dis-enrolled (had two choice, fail or bail and after 5 weeks, realized it wasn't for me) and went to a new 140 ice breaker, waited a year and off the RM school. So I made SN 6 months after being at the station, I had almost 3 years as a SA/Sn before graduating A school as a 3rd. I learned a lot at both units and didn't have any bad experiences.

Just posting though to point out lots of links to the lists no longer work. MOD?

The links have been down for some time. It's nothing the mods here have any control over, it was a decision made by Personnel Command (I believe) to take those off the public website.
