    Hi coastie wives!

My husband has gone through MEPs, taken his asvab, and is swearing in on April 26th. Hoping for a career in intelligence. We have talked about him joining the USCG for almost 2 years now and it’s finally happening! We are both very excited, but I am also growing a little scared of the unknown, so I was hoping some of you could give me a little advice and tell me what life has been like for you as a coastie wife, as well as maybe telling me anything you wish you had known back when they first joined.

We have a one year old daughter and we’ve been together 8 years. We also got married (finally) last weekend. I’m worried about how our daughter will adjust to life in the military and how it’ll feel not to have him with us for long periods of time. What do you all do to fill your lives? Is it hard/weird to make new friends? Is there a good support system? Do you live on base? I have a million questions! Also, please know that i am 100% committed to supporting him in his career and this is our joint life goal. No backing out for this girl! 😂

Thanks in advance, ladies! Can’t wait to be a part of the USCG family!

Not a wife but been married to one for 36 years and moved 4 times in 13 years in the USAF. Successful military spouses are strong self reliant people who are confident in their own skin and can handle being alone and handling problems by them selves.

The USCG is unique in that its a small organization without a big base support structure for the most part. Your spouse could be assigned to a small boat station in a small town with 12 other Coasties where you live on the economy or assigned to a cutter in a larger town with limited access to military facilities such as the commissary or exchange.

I married a USAF Brat who grew up moving a lot and most Brats are very flexible and make friends easier then those who haven't moved much. Its usually not hard to make friends especially when you are young because there will be other people in the same situation as you and these will become life long friends.

What ever you do, it will be up to you to get involved with your Coast Guard family. Every assignment is what you make of it. I've seen people bitch and moan about where they are assigned and end up hating where they are at for years. Always remember home is where the Coast Guard sends you, make the best of it.

Great advice! I’m a USAF brat as well, but I was always stationary while my dad was gone a lot. I’m fairly self reliant and I’m ready to make wherever we land home, so hopefully I mesh well! I think I’ll just have to work on being less of a recluse and actively trying to meet people, which is totally doable. Thanks!
