On May 18th 1920, congress passed an Act to increase the efficiency of the commissioned , warrant, enlisted members of the various services. It particularly related to pay.
Of importance to the Coast Guard was a major change to the enlisted personnel on the USCG. One of the sections made the grades ant ratings of the Coast Guard the same as the US Navy. It crated the rate of Chief Petty Officer in the CG and established ratings that were the same as the USN.
The CG ratings of Boatswain's mate, Gunner's mate, Storekeeper, Ships Cook, Commissary Steward, and Musician were created.
With the Act, pay grades were established and all the government services kept the same pay rates..
