So if you've listened to President Trump's speeches lately, you're probably familiar with the fact that he is pushing the Pentagon to create a so-called "Space Force". I think this is utterly absurd and unnecessary. The Outer Space Treaty forbids the deployment of space-based weaponry, and all of the world's great powers are signatories to it. Russia has already threatened the United States over it. So if the Space Force somehow did make it through the Pentagon, it wouldn't be able to function as much more than a NASA 2.0. If the President is so bent on expanding American interests in space, he should look to the already existing agencies and root out their inefficiencies rather than creating an entirely new branch of the Armed Forces to drain funds and manpower from the old, all for something which isn't even achievable in our lifetimes.
The issue of funding and manpower is what disturbs me most about it. It will have to come from somewhere, and as we all know, the Coast Guard is always the first to get hit with budget cuts, despite the fact that its budget is already overcut and always has been.
So what's everyone else's opinions on it?
