My son went to MEPS last Tuesday and was then sent to Cape May. At MEPS he was two pounds overweight. He weighed in at 192. Two weeks prior he weighed in at MEPS at 190, he was told he was fine. The recruiter never told him what his limit was. I know this isn’t an excuse. But if he would have said something I know my son would have lost a few pounds. My son called me on Friday, two days after he arrived at Cape May to say he is probably being sent home due to his weight. He also said they measured his BMI and he was over. Today is Tuesday and I haven’t heard anything. When will I know? I heard that recruits are sent home on a Friday. Will I hear anything prior? I have been going crazy not knowing what is going on.

I was sent home for the same exact reason. I left for Cape May on July 10th. I was 4lbs over at MEPS and they did my measurements and I was completely fine with BMI. Then they did it at Cape May on Wednesday late afternoon and told my I was 5% over the allowable BMI for my height and that I would be discharged. Your son is most likely in DHE (Discharge Holding Element) and will stay there until the following Friday. I was put in DHE on Friday 13 July and got officially discharged and left cape May on Friday 20 July. You won’t probably hear from him again until maybe Thursday after he visits with the yoemans and gets his travel arrangements. In DHE you’re usually allowed 2 phone calls. One to update your mom/dad and two to let them know when you’re leaving and when you’re flight will be in to pick them up. I’m sorry this happened to your son. I know the feeling and it’s devastating. Tell him to keep his head up and lose the weight and go back in 6 months. Maybe we’ll be in the same company or something.

Sending recruits home must be something new. My fiancé is in the coastguard and he has talked to his senior and master chief who were stationed at Cape May. They said that they didn’t send recruits home if they were a couple pounds overweight. It has to be a devastating feeling. But I know this will push him to work hard. Good luck with losing weight and going back to Cape May in six months.

Absolutely 100% untrue. They have ALWAYS sent recruits home that were over the weight limit. My ex is a retired Captain and my son is an OS2. This has been going on for time in memorium. There are weight standards... you don't meet them, you go home. Shame on the recruiter for letting someone slide that was close. Most recruiters will not ship a recruit unless they are 5 to 10 pounds under the maximum allowable. This is not new...
