    Good Evening,

I am currently a junior at The Citadel, and I plan on applying to DCSS and OCS/R, and I am looking for advice on how to make myself a better candidate for selection and what my current chances of getting selected are.  I have a not so good GPA of 2.85; I am a criminal justice major with a minor in intelligence and security studies.  Currently I hold a leadership position within the corp of cadets, a leadership position in a national organization, and I participate in several clubs.  This past summer I had an internship, and I am currently looking for another one for this upcoming summer.  I have engaged in several community service projects, but I plan on increasing the amount I do.  Any advice on how to make myself a better candidate would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you're doing what you should be. Make sure you're taking on leadership roles in some of those extracurricular activities - stuff that you can demonstrate in your application (organizing a service project that helped XX people and raised $XX, mentoring XX junior level students to raise their grades, etc, etc).

More importantly, though - don't disregard the academics for the sake of extra-curriculars. Improving your GPA is something you can speak to in your application.

Other than that - if you're not already, make sure you're developing solid professional relationships with professors or community leaders who can write your recommendations when the time comes.

    Good evening,

You have a lot of things going for you. As a junior, you are in a great spot to begin gathering package requirements and begin the application package. It's impossible to gauge your chances of being selected due to the complexity of the contributing factors of an application package. I had to submit two application packages. The first I was put on an alternate list and the second I was accepted. From personal experience, I have a couple of recommendations for your current situation.

First, I would maintain the leadership roles you are serving in now and don't get too spread thin. Second, I would focus on your GPA. You have one and a half years to bring that number up, which is a good amount of time. Third, start familiarizing yourself with the application components ASAP. There are decent amount of application components and you will have to own the whole process. As Ebee said, recommendations are important. Focus on building a couple solid mentor relationships, practice your interview skills, and continue serving your community. Lastly, I encourage you to not give up on the process and be prepared for the possibility of submitting more than one application.

Keep in mind, I'm in no way a recruiter or anything, but I went through your collegiate phase relatively recently. Good luck
