I realize there's a lowest score you must exceed to even qualify, but I also know y'all aren't needing to pick from the bottom of the barrel.  What would be considered a safe and competitive score to be taken seriously, and what if I get to the ASVAB and my composites aren't good?  Will they drop me, or will I just get a random job?  I'm really just struggling with math, and don't have much experience in specialized fields like electrical, mechanical, etc.
Sorry if it's been asked before.
    Thanks

There is no competitive score. Either you score high enough to enlist, or you don't. Same with your job. Either you score high enough to put your name on the list for that school, or you don't. The CG doesn't assign you a job. You pick the ones you're interested in and qualify for.

That's interesting. When I talked to the Air Force, they said they're not really looking at any scores under 70 right now, even though their technical standard is well below that score.
Is CG different, or was he pulling my chain?

You answered your own question. You spoke to the Air Force. That's their recruiting standard and policy. The Coast Guard has their own recruiting standard and policy. You cannot compare apples to elephants and that's what you are trying to do. The CG has a minimum, every branch does. With the CG you can score a 65 and the other guy taking the test at the same time as you can score a 95. However, 95 dude is a douche. He thinks he is awesome, better than sliced bread and should skip boot camp and become Commandant upon putting on his first uniform. Meanwhile, here you are with your 65, feeling a bit sad. But you show up on time to appointments, you are respectful, you have been asked to supply documentation and you do, you ask questions, you are humbled by the people that have been there before you... Boom 65 IN, 95 standing outside looking in.

Scores matter, don't get me wrong. But there are many other factors that go into being selected. If you want CG answers, speak to your CG recruiter. They are the ones that will decide, not us here on a forum. Also, I do think the AF chooses which job will be perfect for you, regardless if you like that job or not. The CG will look at your ASVAB score and say you qualify to be X Y Z, your choice, you pick. Oh and by the way, you might like X but hang on, get into the fleet, look around and then decide. Y might be something you thought you had no interest in but when you see what Y really does, oh that's where your heart is and you go for that. But it is YOUR choice (based on your scores) no one else picks for you.
