Hello everyone, GM here. I got assigned to a non LE unit out of A school and every time I mention wanting to do law enforcement/DSF/go to BO school, I'm always told that I chose the wrong rate, although I thought LE was a collateral duty? I've been told time and time again I should've gone BM or ME if I wanted that however, I do hear that GMs do more law enforcement on smaller cutters than larger ones, and at this point I'm not sure what to believe.

Can I actually get after what I want to do in this rate or am I going to eventually have to look at switching somehow?

If you want to do LE you'll have to go to a cutter. GMs are on FRCs and larger, the one I had on my FRC was an independent duty GM and a BO.

I'm on a 270 and none of the GM's do LE. They maintain and issue guns and teach at the range but most LE is done by the ME's, BM's and MK's. But anyone on my 270 can do LE as a collateral if they want to.

Since I posted I've been talking with my GM2 about it who is working on helping me aim my career in the right direction. He definitely said smaller cutters/PBs are the way to go. FRCs, from what I've been told DO do drug interdiction and often encourage their GM2 to go to BO school to aid in boardings. I'm gonna try for a taclet or msst if they come up but I'm also pretty interested in the FRCs too. I hear good things.
