As I'm sure you'll be able to read up a bit on DEPOT with a couple of other threads, you would do wise to do the following things:

Memorize the living hell out of the following topics inside and out:

    1) General Orders
    2) Rates/Ranks (and how to describe them)
    3) Ratings (Jobs)
    4) Coast Guard Ethos
    5) Chain of Command (you'll know your CC's when you get there)
    6) "Semper Paratus" the song's first paragraph and chorus
    7) CG boat, helos and planes
    8) Firearm Safety Rules
    9) Classifications of Fire

Make sure you can kill the PF Test because chances are you won't run or do many push-ups in the week prior.

It's an extremely heavy academic program - be prepared to sit up to 12 hours per day on your ass, and take detailed and extensive notes during the e-learning, they help with the quizzes and final exam (which are all open book).

Be prepared for stress - it's designed that way. If you can't handle stress very well, you'll get sick or break down mentally. Make no mistake, it's a shorter program because they cram everything in a short period of time. The 8 week program recruits have to time to adjust, you won't have the luxury.

Here's the thing about DEPOT, you can fly under the radar pretty easily with a large class in short period of time, but you get no respect. If you volunteer for something, make sure you know what you're doing. Your CC's like to see go-getters.

And yeah, get ready for the Galley. If you think you can sit back and relax while you eat, you're sadly mistaken. Just be on your game, listen to the directions they give you, keep your head down, move fast and when standing, keep your heals together. You'll learn about "Performance Trackers". I only got 3 of them, all of them in the Galley, only because I let my guard down.

Ask any other questions you have, I'm happy to help any potential DEPOT recruits. You're going to need it.

Thanks for the post. I'm scheduled to go to DEPOT next month, so I'm getting a bit nervous. I have memorized and quiz myself daily on the general orders, rates/ranks and descriptions, and coast guard ethos, but that's all I got so far, so I have some catching up to do.

A couple of questions for you:

    1) How do I need to be prepared regarding chain of command? Be able to say every person in order, or do they say "Who is the executive officer?" and you have to be able to say a person?

    2) Same question for ratings, how are you questioned on that? One by one, or do you have to be able to say them all on command, or what?

    Thanks!

    Kirk
