    Hello Everyone,

In short, I've had an interest in the Coast Guard for a few years now and regret not joining the military in some capacity to serve my country when I was younger, but the timing was never right. I have a love for the ocean and a tremendous respect for all who serve as I have several family members who have served in some capacity. Now might be a similar situation for me, as far as the timing not being a good time, but I happened across the Coast Guard Reserve page and the wording caught my eye. Specifically: "chance to get a good-paying, part-time job," and, "typically serve close to home."

My current situation is that I am a small business owner in Orange County California, who is essential to the business running. I also just had a son and need to be around to help out my wife, who also works. Considering the reserve may be implausible with my situation, I am curious how schedule oriented these 1 weekends a month are, and then the 2 weeks a year. I feel if I can plan everything out and schedule around it well in advance, it would be possible, but I'm guessing it doesn't work that way.

Does anyone know of alternatives that might work for me? Police related maybe?

Any advise for making my situation work now or in the future is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what you're asking here. "Police related?" What are you referring to? As a reservist, you're required to show up two days a month, on average, and perform two weeks active duty per year. Something else to be aware of is that you are subject to recall to active duty at any time. The Reserve component exists to augment the Active Duty side when needed. You could be recalled for anywhere from 30 days to one year. If this poses a problem to your family life, then perhaps the Reserves are not for you. To just be available for two days/month, doesn't do anyone any good.

In 18 years in the CGR, I've been recalled five different times: 2003- 6 months; 2005-90 days; 2006-1 year; 2010-60 days; 2015-30 days.  If you can't accept something like that, then you probabaly shouldn't enlist.

Know its a month old now but just something I saw to add to Chief. We had an officer at our large unit who is a supervisor in a government agency and reservist officer. He was considered to be a subject matter expert in his field and the coast guard felt a large gap in the subject. They activated him (no choice of his own) for two years to help bridge the gap in their program. Just throwing that out there.
