    OK who can tell me what mission he undertook while Lt. Commander in Alaska, and what type of animal it involved, and for the bonus point you can tell me the famous cutter he was stationed on too.

    I believe he was sent on a mission to Siberia to purchase a reindeer herd! I think he brought back about 250 of them..... to be used by the Inuits in northern Alaska. That was quite a trip back in those days, I'm sure. After that, he went on to command the cutter Bear.

    Darn it, Trey, you ruined my fun. : ) Do I still get my bonus points?? Actually, I think I must have missed this one when you asked it....or else I just forgot about it because I had to look it up. A cool thing, too.....my daughter got a tour of the Bertholf a couple weeks ago. She's on the Boutwell and it's sitting about 50 feet away out there in Alameda. She said it was pretty cool.
