I'm a recent college graduate looking at joining the Coast Guard.

The rate I'm most interested in is Intelligence Specialist, but I've heard it can take 2-3 years to get in because you have to get a top-level security clearance. I've also been told that Operations Specialists are currently getting a $10,000 bonus immediately after boot camp because they're in such a need.

Here's my question. Would it be possible for me to immediately join OS and get that bonus while I wait the 3 years for my IS clearance to go through and then switch my rate?

If you go to a rating that is short and you get a signing bonus, the chances are extremely slim that they would let you switch ratings.

The CG isn't going to spend the money to send you through two A Schools

Well, the CG will allow you to change ratings. It has happened. But let's think about it this way... The CG is in need of OS, so badly they are willing to pay you $10,000 to become an OS. So you decide that sounds good, go to school, cash the check and then say "Oh hey, I wanted to be this to hold me over but I'm gonna go do something else now. So send me to a different school!" First of all, it will be hard to change your rating when the rating you are in is in short supply already. Second of all, if they pay you $10,000, don't you think there is a commitment attached to that or you'll have to pay it back???? Why is everyone always looking for the biggest payout and the fastest shortcut! No one starts out as Commandant. No one starts out with millions in their bank account. It is EARNED over time, hard work and waiting for your chance.

There are enough shitty OS's out there because they wanted the bonus. I know, my son loves being an OS but there are many that are awful because they just saw a quick dollar. If that isn't what you want to do as a career, WAIT for what you do want to do as a career. It will be worth it to you, to your shipmates, to your career, to the CG if you wait and do what makes you the happiest and most productive.

I'm not going to jump you for asking this because you're not in the CG and you don't know the process. No fault of your own. When I was first looking to join I got on here and asked a few questions and I was met with the full fury of the old salt dogs that were apparently shaken to their core by my ignorance of the service and chose to attack me rather than help me understand. So with that said, this is a good question. From experience, go the rating you want and wait it out. I waited 3 years to get to school and it was the greatest decision of my life. I've been in 8 years now and when I look back on those 3 years as a non-rate it feels like it flew by. Mind you, at the time it wasn't rainbows and butterflies, but those 3 years are a drop in the bucket when compared to a full career doing a job you love. Two of my fellow non-rates decided to go easy rates (quick to get into) simply to make rate...both of them left the service within 2 years of going to school after fighting their commands to break their contracts because they hated their lives. Just join, place your name on the IS list, wait it out and I promise you you'll be much happier than settling for a rate you're not fully committed to.

Smurf, no one here jumped the OP for his question. I wanted him/her to see there is a REASON that OS is offering a signing bonus and that it would make it an extremely, if not an impossible, task to switch rates. Why anyone would think you would get a $10,000 bonus and say meh, never mind, is beyond me. You don't need to know the workings of the CG or the military to realize when you are incentivized to do a job, your employer expects you to stick with it. Also, even the most naive person must understand this isn't like the private sector. You can't accept a bonus and say thanks for the check, I'm going to go work for this other life saving company so I won't be in on Monday. If you thought the "old salts" on here were rough, how did you manage them as a nonrate when you were subjected to them all the time? Please, we aren't all that rough... we're HONEST. Big damn difference.
