So I've heard that after boot camp you are responsible for getting yourself to your first station. How would this effect someone who doesn't have a car? I own a motorcycle, and am considering selling it to get a more practical vehicle, but if I can save on insurance and gas by keeping it, that is a better option. Will I need a vehicle to haul my belongings to my first station? What happens on the 5 day leave between basic training and your first station?

Any tips would help. Thanks 😁

Well not having a car isn't a problem, you can fly. Of course, you can't take a motorcycle on a plane, so you would drive that. The military will move household goods for you. You could rent a u-haul, a trailer and load your own stuff and drive to your first duty station. Keep in mind, you don't know where you will be going. Would you want a motorcycle on Kodiak Island in Alaska? Would you want a 4-wheel drive Hummer in Key West, Florida? I'm not saying sell your bike but I am saying don't overthink it until you know where you are headed. If you are driving yourself to your duty station you do get transit time on top of your 5 days leave. You get 1 day for every 350 miles from Cape May, not from your home. So if you get Boston, you are provided 1 days of travel, even if it means you fly home to San Diego after boot and have to drive to Boston. You still only get 1 day drive time because it is from Cape May. If you get San Diego and live in San Diego, you will still be able to get, I believe it is 9 days, to drive there.

The 5 days of leave between boot and unit are yours to do what you like with. There are some restrictions, traveling to Russia or Cuba is pretty much out of the question. But if you want to stop in Missoula, Montana to visit Great Aunt Tilly, you can do that. More information will be provided in boot. There are plenty of options open.

You will have lots of assistance in boot camp with planning your travel. You have the choice of having the coast guard buy you a plane ticket from Cape May to your unit, you can buy the plane ticket, you can drive or you can do a mix of flying and driving. The government also covers the cost of shipping your household goods to your new home. If you get stationed outside the continental US the coast guard will pay to ship your vehicle to your new home as well.
