    Hi all!

I'm interested in enlisting with the intention of attending A school training for an AST. I have done personal research and understand this is a highly challenging job, where not too many people are able to do it. I wanted to get the opinions or possibly personal experience from an AST who has served/currently on active duty. It would be amazing if I could hear from a female AST preferably, however given there are very few I understand if this is not possible. Does anyone happen to know the current wait time for the AST A school?
I am currently a senior in college, and understand that I also have the potential to apply for CSPI officer candidate school - could anyone offer any info/guidance here?

    Thank you!

The current wait time for AST is 6 to 9 months.

There is a good description for the CSPI program on the gocoastguard.com website. Im pretty sure you have to be a sophomore or junior. But basically you go to boot camp, go back to school while working under your local recruiter 4 hours a week. You will be being paid an E3 enlisted salary as well as housing allowance. Once the graduate you go to officer candidate school and graduate as an officer. Read up about it on the go coastguard site, it's a pretty complex program

If you are an officer, you aren't an AST.

I can answer any AST questions you may have. I don't think there would be any questions that are female specific I couldn't answer. Like Old Guard said, if you are an officer, you cannot be an AST. Also, you will want to look into the TYPE 2 program. You will pass an intro physical test that is harder than the regular one with your recruiter and also in boot camp. That will get you to an air station out of boot camp and you will be assigned a mentor in an AST shop. You will not be assigned to a shop but you will have time to workout with them and prep for "A" School.
You will go to your first unit, work with AST's and do your job at the unit. You will then go to a Prep class for a week. Then you will go to "A" School when your time comes. Feel free to ask as many questions you may have. We are here to help.
