Are Officers who commission via OCS given the same opportunities for choosing their career fields as those who commission from the academy?

For example, does one who comes through OCS have the same opportunity to be assigned to an afloat billet as one who comes through the academy? Or are they more likely to see a different spread of career field opportunities.

I approach this as an active Army Officer who went through Army OCS, where it is generally accepted that West Pointers and ROTC get first pick of career field branch numbers, and OCS candidates get their "leftovers".

Generally, what career field opportunities are available to OCS graduates, and what are the average percentages of billets available of each per class.

    Thank you.

While the Coast guard is making strides to correct the issue you are talking about, it is an issue.  If you graduate from the Academy you have a better chance of going afloat for your first billet and not to a Sector.  OCS has a much, much higher rate of assigning new ensigns to Sectors and not cutters.  This means the Academy grad will almost always have a leg up any OCS grad.

Like I stated though, the Coast Guard is working to make some changes and is actively assigning more Academy grads to non-afloat billets and opening up a few more afloat billets to OCS grads.

Career wise it just depends on what you want to do. If you want to be on the prevention side of things, going to a Sector first is going to really help you get pollution response/ICS quals right off the bat and you will probably be get your Marine Safety pin quicker than those afloat, however you will still be behind a person equally as motivated who went underway, they will be more likely to get a command which will propel them to the O5 and above ranks.

Just to correct one thing Bucky has offered. My ex-husband is a retired Coastie. He was 30 years active duty, going from an E1 in boot camp to retiring as an O6 and being a CO at 3 different units. He was OCS, he was a Mustang and he never served even 1 day afloat. He had his Shrimp Fork and was quite proud of that. He had a long and storied career. So you can make O5 and higher and not have ANY seatime. He made promotion every time he was eligible, didn't get passed over once.

my last cutter, we had 1 ocs ensign come every year. I believe it depends on the time of year you graduate. If you graduate the week before the academy cadets, you get picks first.

It seems like, if you want to get underway, you will. There are plenty of people that don't.
Take what you like and leave the rest behind.
