Hello all, I am considering joining the Coast Guard for many reasons, but a big reason is to take advantage of the Tuition Assistance and work on my College Degree while active duty. I know this is no small feat, but I've heard it has been done before. I also would like to travel some and maybe even try to be stationed on a cutter. How difficult is it to take college classes while stationed on a cutter? Should I try to choose a land unit or small boat station so it is easier to complete college classes? Any help is appreciated!

Being on a cutter presents challenges because of internet connection or just not being able to attend a brick and mortar school. But it has been done before and will be done again. Where you go, especially out of boot camp, is a crap shoot. You could end up at a small boat station, you could end up on one of the Polar Class cutters. It is solely needs of service, not needs of student. Which by the way, you will be a Coastie first, student second. You'll need to be able to go where they need you and if that means afloat and you have to table education, that's that for the moment. My ex husband completed an Associates Degree, a Bachelors Degree and a Masters Degree all while on active duty. But it also took him about 19 years to complete all that. There were semesters he knew, 1 class, that's it, my schedule won't allow for a full course load.

OldGuard, thank you for the information! I will have an Associates Degree before enlisting, so that gives me however long my enlistment is to complete the last two years on my Bachelor's. I understand I would be a Coastie first, and I am completely committed to that, and will always put that before everything else. Hopefully between CLEP exams and the three classes per year allowed by Tuition Assistance, I can complete my degree while on active duty. Thanks for the info and personal story!

From personal experince being on a larger cutter at sea, you will have either slow or no internet connection at all for days or weeks at a time. Taking classes while on a larger cutter is not recommended and probably not possible.

I've done it. I was on a 210 and did online classes at a top 100 university. It's not easy and I almost failed my final due to internet connectivity.

My advice is to go to a military friendly school if you get a cutter. Land unit is a million times easier. I took 2 classes in A school and even that was easier than a cutter.
