My boyfriend of 5 years is meeting with a CG recruiter in 2 weeks. He's looking into Marine Science Technician.. I've done lots of research but have not gotten the answer to all of my questions.
As a girlfriend, i know i would not be housed with him. But, how frequently does an MST move? How long is their basic training, schooling etc.? What are the differences of being married, or not in the CG? Will they go out to sea?
I just want to be as informed as I can, because i'll be working while he is at the recruiting office and i can not go with him..
    Thanks in advance!

Moves are the same for MST as they are for anyone else. Typically every 4 years, can move sooner if necessary.
Basic is the same as everyone else, rating makes no difference. It is 8 glorious weeks in Cape may, NJ. MST school used to be 18 weeks long, I don't know if that has changed at all. (A current MST might be able to better answer that question)
MST has very few billets on ships. They are typically at sectors. My ex husband was an MST and then eventually became an officer and was only in the M Field for the remainder of his career. With the exception of long cruise during OCS (officer candidate school) he was never aboard a ship in a 30 year career in the Coast Guard.
The differences of being married or not in the CG, well... One he is single in the military, the other isn't in the military. The difference of being a married military member and a non-married military member... A married member has a spouse. The spouse moves with the military member. There are benefits, additional allowances, that sort of thing. But it is still military, the CG still comes first. There could be birthdays, holidays, anniversaries missed for the sake of the service. That is something a spouse must be prepared to accept. What else would you like to know?? Happy to help.

Thank you so much for responding, and for your help!!
Are there other means of contact besides mailing letters during basic? What are the odds of being stationed where you request?

Communicating in boot camp is limited to letters for the most part. He will be able to make a phone call the day he arrives to let you know he made it safely, one call in week 5 to let you know where he is being stationed and then he will be able to make calls to make travel arrangements to his new unit later on in boot camp. He will also get his cell phone during on-base and off-base liberty time if his company earns it.

As for being stationed where you want there are no odds. It depends on what positions the coast guard has available and what he asks for. If he wants a small boat station in Florida and all that's available is a cutter in Virginia that's what he is getting. Some people get exactly what they want others get the exact opposite. The detailers who pick his station do try their best to give people what they want.
