    Morning all...

New to this forum but not to the military.  Helping with some research for my son.  I am familiar with the military, specifically the pathway in the USN.   Through research I am finding that the pathway to USCG aviation appears to be a bit different.  So looking for some input here.

Questions for those in the know:

Is there a direct pathway from University to OCS with a pre-OCS selection to the USCG aviation community in a pilot slot ?
I assume he needs to take the ASVAB or submit SAT/ACT scores for test waiver?
If he wants to enter OCS right after college graduation (spring 2020), I read somewhere that his packet needs to be in by this November (2019) - Confirm?

Please attach any URL's or files that would help with our research

    Thanks

Only direct path is via DCA program, which requires the applicant to have/be a prior military aviator.

If accepted and after OCS graduation, he could apply for flight school if he meets all the criteria... it is competitive.

In general, no. There is not a way to get pre-selected for flight school The program is set up for a new officer to attend OCS and compete for a flight slot in OCS. If they get a slot, they directly to flight school. If they do not, they have a couple of years to keep competing to attend flight school while they do the job they are assigned after OCS.

I know many pilots who went that pat. Most were selected right out of OCS but many entered the flight program a while later. Until that time they had many paths, some worked on ships, some worked at CG headquarters, and others were doing some type of office work somewhere in the Coast Guard. But they made it to flight school. I will tell you from personal experience, CG aviation is worth the work.

Well there actually does exist a path; although unconventional in a sense. Anyone in the College Student Pre-commissioning Initiative (CSPI) program can compete for a guaranteed flight school spot through the Wilks Flight Initiative (WIFI) program. After being selected for CSPI the recruit is sworn in as an E3 on active duty in the CG and will spend the next 2 years completing their undergraduate degree. (Look up CSPI to see the terms of that program and if your son is at a qualifying school). Before starting the senior year of college the recruit can apply to WIFI. If accepted they will have a guaranteed flight school spot upon graduating college and OCS. Generally only 2 get selected for WIFI each year from the pool of CSPI recruits that apply.

#CPORJM - Thanks for the link Chief... We have researched the site but some of the details were missing.  Apprreciate the response.

#sardaddy - Very helpful post.  So, in summary.  He gets selected to OCS and fights for a pilot slot while in OCS.  I assume this is a combination of ASTB scores and interviews while in OCS.  Can you share the timeline for this activity during OSC.  I also assume it occurs past the INDOC phase of OCS.

The upshot is that if he is selected during OSC, off to Pensacola for API following OCS.  If not selected in OCS, he will move into his USCG job as an Ensign after completion of OCS with the ability to continue his quest toward the pilot community.

    Great stuff all... thanks again
