Is HS GPA considered when enlisting?

My son is a Junior in HS (a very young Junior - turned 16 after the start of the school year and will graduate 3 months before turning 18).  Unfortunately, while he is very intelligent, he was quite immature and decided that since he planned to go in to the military, he didn't have to actually do any work in high school.  Up until this year, he has failed 1/3 of all the classes he's taken (including crafts...CRAFTS!!) and retaken many classes in summer and evening school (which he's all passed, in less than half the required time with a B or better).  His current GPA is a 1.4 - BUT, this year he has enrolled in a Culinary Arts program and found his passion which has made all the difference.  He's making a solid effort and aims to pass all of his classes this semester - he's even concurrently enrolled at a local university for the Culinary program and is earning college credit for those classes.  He plans to enlist as a Culinary Specialist (and will have a ProStart Culinary certificate which will give him an additional bonus - not as much as with an AA degree but above current standard bonus) and assuming he scores well enough on the ASVAB (which he should - he's very smart, just chose not to do the work or even did it but just didn't turn it in) will the fact that he had a rough start in HS count against him?  I think at best he can get his GPA to over a 2.0 but even 2.5 might be a stretch as this point.  He's going to take the ASVAB for the 1st time next Spring and knows what he needs both to quality for CG and for CS, if he doesn't score high enough, he will study and take again his senior year, but will that be enough?

While GPA isn't a factor, a HS diploma is required (GED in certain circumstances). https://www.gocoastguard.com/

Thank you, and yes, he'll for sure have a diploma - he's still on track to graduate on time and "only" needs a 1.0 to graduate and the minimum number of credits...he'll fulfill that without even taking a full load this year or next...(which blows my mind because when I was in HS, we had to take essentially a full load every semester except senior year and if you failed 2 classes, you'd need to make them up, OR take full load every year or you wouldn't graduate with your class...if you failed more than 2, you'd have to take a full load AND makeup the courses or you wouldn't graduate. My son has failed 11 classes through 4 semesters, only made up 6 of those and will graduate on time without a full load this year or next...it's crazy...)

I remember discussing my GPA with a recruiter. We discussed my HS GPA and college GPA. I also discussed my GPA during an OCS interview. My HS GPA was 3.8, college was just about the same. Im not sure how much of a factor it was but I would assume it played a little bit in the people who made it vs. the people who maybe didn't. Maybe if his ASVAB is in the 80's or 90's, it may not matter but if ASVAB scores reflect similar scores to GPA, I can only assume it would impact enlistment.
Maybe I'm going slightly against the grain here to say that I think a GPA in the 1's has a chance to impact enlistment but I'll stick with that. GPA isn't the only factor in enlistment but I think its a contributing factor along with other measurable aspects and intangibles.

When I enlisted all I had to do was provide a copy of my high school diploma and that was it, no discussion of my GPA. Judging by the current recruiting scene I dont think high school GPA will be a factor as long as a diploma is earned
