I am interested in joining the Coast Guard Reserve. I'm still fairly early and doing my research. One question about a potential appearance of conflict with my current job.
I currently work at a logistics company that handles imports and exports around the world and into/out of the US. I am also a Licensed Customs Broker with CBP and can file customs entries on behalf of our customers for their imports into the US.
Presumably, in several capacities within the Coast Guard, I would have access to information about Coast Guard activities in our area.
e.g. One could potentially tip off an importer of Coast Guard activity in a specific port.
This would be illegal and improper for a Customs Broker whether or not a Coast Guard Reservist. There is nothing like attorney client privilege between a customs broker and their customer, quite the opposite in fact.
However, Would this constitute some sort of potential conflict that would preempt me from being able to serve on the Coast Guard Reserve? Is this something I could discuss with a recruiter?
I'm happy to clarify further.
