I am currently serving in an Independent Duty Role as a second class on a buoy tender. I am eligible to take the November 2020 Servicewide and have a high chance of advancing with my sea time and award points. Both my contract and my tour end in May 2022 and I am thinking about separating. However, if I advance to first class is there a possibility that I could be forced to transfer then have to extend another year or two at a new unit? Or am I likely to serve my final year as a first class and then get out on time? Your help is appreciated.

I'm fairly certain you already know the answer to your question. If you're a second class, you know how it works. You might be able to stay at your unit if there is a billet available for a first. It is extremely unlikely they will keep a first class in a second billet. Also, you should know the OBLISERV requirements on making the next rank. I'm not sure how long it is but May 2022, that might be ok, if you make it fast. If there are delays to first and you are under a year time left, you will probably have to extend. I think it is a year minimum, might be more. I think you are looking at going longer if you take and make first class. Plus, this is just a curious thing, if you don't want to stay in, why take that advancement from someone that does want to stay in but might not have the dinosaur points you have? Let someone who is staying in have the chance to advance their career. You already have your exit strategy in mind, which is fantastic, I'm not saying that ina cruel way. We all need to make our plans as we see them. Let someone who is looking at longer term get the spot. Just a thought, not an attack.

I appreciate the response and did not take it as an attack. I spoke with my command the other day and they recommended to me the TEMPSEP program where I could spend a max two years out of the CG pursuing a degree, travel, etc. and then come back in afterwards. Sorry that I wasn't specific about my goals before.

The assignments manual outlines obliserve requirements. If you are told to transfer, you will require a 1 year obliserve if you have 6 years or more at the time of transfer. If you have less than 6 years, then you will have to obligate a full tour. If you transfer oconus you have to fulfill a full tour regardless of time in.

Tempseps have to be at the end of your tour, so if you want to give that a shot in 2022, give it a shot. If you don't reach out to come back in, you stay out automatically.
Take what you like and leave the rest behind.
