I know that the Coast Guard has dentists, do any get to serve on ships or are they mostly shore based? Do they just work on active duty or dependents also?
All of our MD's and DDS's are provided by the Navy or the US Public Health Service. The only medical personnel organic to the CG are the HS rating (enlisted personnel) or Physician's Assistants (LT, AKA Capt in the Air Force world). There are some warrant officers, but they typically are supervising enlisted personnel at a Base clinic. All of the care at sea is done by an Independent Duty HS assigned to that cutter.
