Hello everyone. Thanks in advance for reading this. Any feedback or insight would be greatly appreciated.
For context, I am a 28-year-old male residing in Maryland. I am a full-time graphic designer working for a non-profit. I have a bachelor's degree in Fine Art & Design.
For the last three years, I have kept revisiting the idea of joining either the USCG or Navy as a Reservist. I realize my skills might not directly translate to a position with the Coast Guard, but it looks like at a glance that the Public Affairs Specialist position could closely relate to my current daily job. I also enjoy to cook, have worked in a few restaurants and think I might enjoy being a Culinary Specialist. In college I was a part of a fraternity, and I really enjoyed the camaraderie, sense of purpose, and general feeling of always bettering myself. I miss this aspect in my life. I'm interested in joining mainly being a part of something bigger than myself, and the opportunity to broaden my life experiences, but also the part-time income and benefits are enticing as well. I own a home and have about $14K in student loan debt. I do enjoy my current job, so I think being a Reservist would best suit my lifestyle and allow me to keep my career.
Are any fellow Reservists in here? Have you enjoyed your time with the Coast Guard so far? For someone my age getting closer to 30, do you think this is a bad idea? Any input would be amazing.
Thanks again for your time.
